Accelerator physics for pedestrians

These pages are meant to give an idea of how an accelerator works. Hands-on simulations are provide in the form of Java Applets. To be able to enjoy the pages, you will need a Java-enabled Web-Browser.
Test: to see if your browser will allow you to play with the simulations, check whether clicking in the rectangle below changes its color.

• If clicking in the rectangle makes its color change from green to red , it's fine and you can proceed to the first lesson: The effect of a focusing quadrupole
• If instead of a rectangle you have a text indicating that "your browser is java-challenged", then you won't be able to play the simulations.
• If you get a (possibly grey) rectangle which doesn't change color no matter how hard you click in it, you won't be able to play the simulations either.
